What about the human biome; the millions of microbes that coexist within each of us?  A study on the parasite toxoplasma gondii noted that they can inspire certain behaviors: attraction and repulsion, according to their impulse, not ours. When I had an overabundance of testosterone in my blood,  was I a heightened version of myself… or was the hormone using me to become a more creative, truer expression of the human known by some as Brenda Ray?

Always a knit of identity, always distinction, always a breed  of life.   Walt Whitman
